Soap Box

Tonight I am stepping up onto my soap box.

Last week Matt, Gabe and I went to the Houston Rockets game.  Remember, the game we were at for only part of the 1st quarter.  Well, those couple minutes were enough for me to leave slightly offended and very distressed by what we saw there.  Rather than just stewing on it, this past weekend I put my disgust into action and sent off an email to the Rockets head office.

Yes, I went there.  I am turning into that person that sends emails to organizations to complain.  (And after talking to Matt this evening I may just have to send a hard copy by mail)
What was it that worked me up so much that I needed to write a letter?  The Houston Rocket cheerleaders.  Yep, you read it correctly; I complained about their outfits!  There's no need for you to google it and see what they wear because I can tell you and save some immodesty.  Their top provided no more coverage than a bra (wow, that seems weird to type on the internet) and their bottoms were the same as boy-short panties.  It was disgusting.

And sinful. Yes, I said sinful. Sinful for all parties involved.
Sinful because when some men would watch them dance, there may be some inevitable lust happening.

Sinful because young girls in the audience would see these cheerleaders and be envious that they don't look like that.

Sinful that a woman would put her body on show like that.  Gabriel is 2 years old and I didn't want him to watch it.  Honestly, it would be like walking to the park and seeing someone walking their dog in their undergarments!
What ever happened to modesty?  I'm not talking about long skirts and turtleneck sweaters, just enough clothing to keep yourself covered.

"And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes." - 1 Timothy 2:9
My even slightly bigger issue with the cheerleaders outfits; rather than showing-off the athletic talents needed to be a professional cheerleader (and no I'm not being snarky), they're showing off their bodies.  So young women in the stands focus not on the athleticism of the athlete's but the beauty of them.  And this outward beauty, the world has too much of it!  We have forgotten that true beauty comes from the inside;
"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight." - 1 Peter 3:3-4

Tonight I am praying that young girls, teenagers and the early 20-something young ladies who are still finding themselves will remember true beauty comes from within and that your future husband is not going to love you because of short skirts or tight tops but because of your inner beauty.  I'm also praying for Gabriel, my sweet nephews and all other little boys that they will be raised in families that teach them not to objectify themselves to the temptations of the world and to respect women for their inner beauty not their outer trappings.

Stepping off my soapbox.

I realize that this is not a normal topic for me; nothing about Gabe, adoption, being a mom... but this has been on my heart for a week now and I just wanted to share.

XOXO

Girl, I drove my son to the high school last year & came home in a complete twist over what I saw. It wasn't even that warm, but girls were wearing shorts that were nothing more than underwear. And for good measure, they had on longer tops that gave the illusion of having no pants on at all. I about croaked, & my son said, "Mom, lots of girls dress like that all the time." Why??? What message are you trying to send, & where is your mother?? And I'm saddened that my son is exposed to this every single day. A bit of a distraction, I'd say.

Amen Girl! I feel the same way...Every Night EJ and I pray for modesty and purity as she grows, and I have given her examples too. Like last summer when our nephew took his shirt off outside and she wanted to as well...I said you are getting to old to do that...modesty means girls stay covered up...purity means we don't show others the things we keep covered up and we don't kiss until we are married... :) I would have been disgusted by that too!
